We are in a drought you say?

I’m not one of those that run around screaming that we are all going to die because we are going to run out of water, breathable air, or that we are going to glow because of Yucca Mountain. Quite frankly I’ve got better things to do and I also realize that we little humans can hardly make it rain much less destroy this planet.

If Lake Mead is a man made lake because of Boulder Dam, why is the water level so “low”? The logical theory that I’m falling for is this:

-If someone would want to blow up the dam, our measure of security would be to station police check points at each end but far enough back as to prevent a runaway from blowing through.

-If a terrorist got past the check point but alerted security, I would install automatic barriers to prevent any large truck access.

-If a terrorist succeeded and triggered a bomb, the worst situation would be to have a full lake. The nature of high pressure water would escalate and demolish the dam with just a “small crater”. Therefore I (if I were in charge) would lower the water level in order to prevent such an event and make it possible to make any repairs necessary from such an event.

Now you might ask me for evidence of such a theory. Here it is:

-Lake Powel’s dam has 3 massive water gates that are fully opened flushing water down the Colorado River to Lake Mead.

-Most of Colorado’s lakes (farther up from Lake Powel) are completely full and with the recent snow and rain, they need to drain.

But please keep in mind that we are in a drought.

Hey Cheryl… this one’s for you:

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted' for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

Reading things like this makes me proud to be an American.

I find it amazing how life can go so smoothly until your kids get sick. It is pure torment. I think torture is more appropriate. Both Clay and Damon are sick. Clay has a severe chest cold/influenza much like Damon had last year. The short, fast breaths he is taking is more than I can stand to watch. His body is starving for oxygen and there is nothing his powerful dad can do about it. Last year when Damon was like this, I sat in the restroom at work and sobbed for hours knowing what little I could do but wait it out. On one hand, you want God to remove all the sickness from his limp body and have it transferred into yours if only to save him. On the other, I know that he will survive this and his body will be that much stronger against infections because of this. Nothing I do today will go right because my mind is elsewhere. Nothing.

I also find it amazing how much Damon can comfort me. Although he too is sick, he is not as nearly severe. He only wants to be with me. To only be by my side while I work on my car or watch a movie with him. What we do is most irrelevant. It is that he is with me. He cares for me in a way that makes me feel like I could conquer the world.

And then there is Ella. How can she kiss so much and not be sick is beyond me. Her gentle eyes are mesmerizing. She will do all that she can to bring your spirit back to full health and then giggle and move on to the next patient. She brings you gifts of grandeur that are designated only for you.

My wife – of which I am nothing without – somehow can keep it all together and put up with me as well. I know that while I am going through this agony over my sick child, her maternal instincts are ten fold which won’t allow her to sleep until Clay is at peace. I don’t know how she can do it. I thought I was the one that was supposed to be the one with all the strength but my body has limits - hers knows none and she retains her beauty through it all.

A little sentimental you say? I’m low on sleep and high on worry. Just wait until you have some treasures that walk amongst you. Your life won’t be the same and I will never look back.

One political blog and I’ll shut up

Yup…Bush won. Let it be. Will he destroy this country? No. If Kerry was elected, would he destroy this country? No. This is reality. Why did Bush win? I think it was because of many things. A few:
1) Everyone knew where Bush stood. Like it or not, they knew what he would do. Kerry continually said “go to my website to see my plan”. This doesn’t work for the normal person. They want up front actual ideas. Something other that a “smarter war” but when pressed, the answer was – we are not completely sure and we will have to review the current situation prior to telling you what will be smarter about the war.
2) “Tax cuts for the rich” doesn’t pack much of a punch when deep down every taxpayer received a tax cut. Rich or poor, they all got one and everyone recognized, including Allen Greenspan (chairman of the Fed), that the economy was tanking prior to and after 9/11 and the tax cuts gave the economy the boost it needed.
3) Most Americans like Bush as a person. He is a very personable guy that most people can relate to. Kerry however never showed who he really was. He always presented himself as a very stiff boring guy – much like Bob Dole.
4) Michael Moor. I have yet to meet someone who can verify all the facts on his “documentary” as truth. Even Moore can’t do it. It is people like this that will ruin the Democrat party. You will never win any election based on hate.
5) Of those that I met who were voting for Kerry, I would ask why. The most overwhelming answer was that they thought Bush was stupid etc. – again hate. In reality, the war was more often than not the most influential factor. However, their anger was misdirected at Bush instead of the circumstances (terrorist threat) that got us to war and the majority saw this clearly.

I will say that the elections gave me the chance to talk to many people that I would have never talked to. Most were intriguing and some were disappointing to see that much hate. I hope that the hate will disperse and the Moores out there will attempt to change the world in a calmer matter. Hope.

This valuable blogspot is posting a warning:

Do not rent “Day After Tomorrow”

When they made this movie, they put all of the money into the computers and none was spent on the plot, script and the actors. Neato’ special effects, but what’s the point? If you liked Chicken Little, you’ll love this one. By the time I watched this thing, I wanted to go outside, light 4 bonfires, sit in my Suburban leave it idling and smoke a pipe. What a bunch of BS!!!

Granted, George Clooney would have given his right arm to act as these guys did but he was probably too busy on yet another movie that will be doomed for a Saturday afternoon miniseries.
